Academics: Grammar siblings show science smarts

Jessica (9M) and Jacob Lee (8W), Grammar siblings are headed to the Canada Wide Science Fair. This is a significant academic achievement as they were selected out of only six projects from Halifax Regional Municipality.


Jacob and Jessica both competed in the Halifax Sci-Tech Expo on March 29, a regional science fair where their projects received top prize to move them to nationals.


Jessica's “Are Eco-Friendly Detergents Really More Eco-Friendly?” studies the effects of eco-friendly and regular detergents on plant growth. She won first place at Grammar's science fair.


Jacob’s “The "Root" of the Problem: Does Ginger Relieve Upset Stomach by Raising pH?" studied the impact of ginger root on stomach pH.


Jessica won a Medal of Excellence, and Best Biology Project, while Jacob won best Chemistry Project, Best Health Science Project, and a Medal of Excellence.


The Canada-wide Science Fair will be held in Fredericton, N.B., at the University of New Brunswick from May 15 to 17 where Jacob and Jessica will complete against students from across the country.


Prize winners at regionals included:

1. Will Myrer & Alex Brushett (9M) - Best Physics Project

2. Adam Bateman (8W) - Medal of Excellence

3. Jacob Lee (8W) - Best Chemistry Project, Best Health Project, and a Medal of Excellence

4. Jessica Lee (9M) - Best Biology Project and Medal of Excellence
